In St. Petersburg, there are a total 43 tramlines, used by 781 trams, having a route-length of 220 km – making it one of the longest route networks in the world. The tram type "71-407-01" commuting over a distance of 17 km with 34 stations.

 

Russian tram manufacturer, the Uraltransmash Corporation chose the well-known Russian manufacturer of traction converters for trams and trolleybuses, NPP EPRO, as supplier and systems integrator of electrical equipment for its new tram type, 71-407-01.

In order to make this project a reality, collaboration between NPP EPRO and Selectron Systems AG was agreed.

The Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS) consists of modules from Selectron's controller family MAS 83x. A multiple unit, based on the proven CAN Powerline train bus protocol, can be provided if the customer so wishes.

The complete engineering and commissioning was made by NPP EPRO, with the software specialists being technically supported by the Selectron team. The first vehicle was introduced at the end of 2014 in St. Petersburg, with the first passengers traveling on the new tram since January of this year.
