Having reached the end of a long service life, the nine iconic HGe 4/4 II locomotives of Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) were modernized to extend their operational lifetime and improve reliability. The contract was awarded to SBB, with Selectron Systems supplying the control modules and corresponding software components.
The Challenge
MGB had reached a turning point: its iconic HGe 4/4 II locomotives, indispensable for Alpine operations for decades, had reached the end of a long technical lifecycle. Obsolete components, limited spare parts availability, and rising maintenance costs made modernization essential. The overhaul was designed to secure the locomotives' operational capability for approximately 20 more years, including service on the Glacier Express, vehicle shuttle operations, freight transport, and infrastructure maintenance. The challenge was to modernize vehicles that operate daily under extreme conditions, including steep gradients, tight curves, and temperatures ranging from arctic cold to midsummer heat, while maintaining the highest levels of reliability.

The Solution
MGB modernized nine HGe 4/4 II rack-and-pinion locomotives and three BDt control cars. Beginning in 2018, the vehicles were refurbished at the SBB workshop in Bellinzona, where they received modern electric traction technology with IGBT converters, new asynchronous motors, state-of-the-art train control systems, new train protection and fire detection systems, and upgraded driver's cabs. At the heart of the modernization was a robust, easy-to-integrate Selectron platform specifically designed to deliver reliable performance for decades, even in demanding environments.
Our goal is to ensure that the modernized locomotives remain in reliable service for another 20 years. With Selectron Systems' proven control technology, we have created the ideal foundation for achieving this. Particularly under the demanding operating conditions in mountainous regions, robust and durable solutions like these are essential.

Our Contribution
For the modernization of the HGe 4/4 II fleet, Selectron Systems supplied the control modules and the corresponding software components. Thanks to our modular platform, the systems could be integrated into the existing vehicle architecture with minimal engineering effort, a key advantage for complex modernization projects.
In addition to easy integration, our products were selected for their exceptional reliability and long-term availability. Powerful software tools also simplified the implementation and commissioning of the new control system.
Value for MGB
Today, the modernized locomotives are more reliable, generate lower maintenance costs, and significantly improve operational safety. MGB can continue to operate its fleet efficiently, benefiting from more predictable lifecycle costs and substantially fewer unplanned technical failures. As a result, the locomotives are well prepared to meet the demanding requirements of Alpine operations for years to come.
