Since entering service in 2007, the 123-vehicle FLIRT fleet operated by MÁV has accumulated more than 300 million kilometers in service. Thanks to high availability and optimized lifecycle costs, significant savings were achieved after only about one-third of the fleet's intended service life, amounting to approximately one-third of the original purchase price. Selectron Systems' reliable control technology has played an important role in this success.
The Challenge
In the early 2000s, the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) faced a major challenge: aging rolling stock, high energy consumption, and growing public expectations for modern, reliable, and environmentally friendly transportation.
MÁV's FLIRT trains are among the most heavily utilized regional multiple units in Europe. Operating long hours and covering substantial distances every day, they place demanding requirements on system availability, operational stability, and maintainability. One of the key challenges was therefore to implement a train control system capable of delivering long-term reliability while minimizing downtime under intensive operating conditions. At the same time, operating and maintenance costs as well as CO₂ emissions needed to be reduced over the vehicles' entire lifecycle.

The Vision
Hungary aimed to transform regional rail transport with a new generation of efficient, comfortable, and reliable trains. Stadler's FLIRT platform was developed to replace aging, energy-intensive rolling stock and turn this vision into reality.
The Solution
The introduction of the FLIRT fleet marked a new era for MÁV. The lightweight and modern trains not only significantly reduced energy costs but also improved passenger comfort and operational reliability in daily service.
For us, reliability and long-term stability are essential. Selectron Systems' solutions have consistently impressed us with exceptionally low failure rates and outstanding material quality. This is demonstrated by around 500 successfully completed joint projects and more than 10,000 vehicles delivered over more than 20 years of close partnership.

Our Contribution
Selectron Systems supplied the advanced train control technology that ensures safe, stable, and highly efficient vehicle operation. Our system solutions make a significant contribution to the outstanding availability of the FLIRT fleet, enabling MÁV to achieve an impressive availability rate of approximately 96%, a figure that stands out even by international standards.
Our generic hardware modules and long-life platforms help optimize lifecycle costs while providing a high degree of technological independence.
Added Value for MÁV
The results speak for themselves: lower operating costs, higher energy efficiency, reduced emissions, and a highly reliable fleet that transports millions of passengers every day. The FLIRT trains have become a true success story in Hungary.
Thanks to the FLIRT fleet's high energy efficiency, MÁV has saved approximately EUR 250 million in electricity costs since the trains entered service. At the same time, the use of electric multiple units has helped avoid around 2 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions, making a significant contribution to climate protection. With an availability rate of 96%, the trains provide passengers with a comfortable, reliable, and environmentally friendly travel experience. The modernization of the fleet has also led to a substantial increase in passenger numbers, reinforcing the FLIRT fleet's role as the backbone of Hungary's regional rail network.
